Cougars roaring in playoffs

The bantam and junior boys basketball teams from Elphinstone are both within one win of playing for North Shore league titles.

The bantam boys beat Mulgrave 38-34 on Monday, setting up a semifinal game against Sutherland, which was played Wednesday night, Feb. 8. A win puts the Cougars into the North Shore final on Monday, Feb. 13 while a loss puts them into the consolation game on Monday.

The junior boys, who finished 10-1 on the season after beating Argyle 45-30 at home on Feb. 2, won their first round playoff game 62-46 on Monday night in West Vancouver, setting up a semifinal game against West Vancouver Wednesday night.

With a win, the Cougars would play for the North Shore title on Monday night or fall into the consolation game.

Vourtsis fights for title

A candidate for fight of the year will be the main event when Coast boxer George Vourtsis takes on Josh Van Ryhn of Harrison Boxing Club Saturday night in Richmond.

On the line is the city welter weight title.

Van Ryhn lost to Vourtsis in a bout sanctioned by Boxing BC last year; however, he is coming off a win over number one ranked Daniel Joseph January in a spectacular performance last month.

Vourtsis has not been gathering dust. He scored a stunning first round stoppage off a very tough Gurp Buttar.

The nine-bout show will take place at the Harrison Club at #150 - 2251 No. 5 Road, just north of Bridgeport on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Bruce traded in Elite League

Garden Bay native Kyle Bruce is on the move in the Elite Ice Hockey League in Europe.

Bruce was traded last week from the Braehead Clan in Scotland to the rival Dundee CCS Stars. Before the trade, Bruce had 13 points in 26 games with the Clan.

"Kyle will bring some real energy that we desperately need," said Stars' coach Brent Hughes on the team's website. "I'm convinced he'll make an impact on the dressing room and that he'll score goals for us."
