Sechelt Minor Ball brought its 2012 softball season to a close last weekend at Kinnikinnick Park with a number of close, competitive championship finals.
In the squirt division, LavTech Computers, coached by Tracy Lloyd, capped an incredible season by winning the regular season title and the playoff title with a 15-9 win over Claytons, coached by Merle Adams.
Behind the reliable tandem of Jacob Chabot's pitching and Lydia Harvey-Lloyd's catching, LavTech was able to hold off the surging Claytons team.
In the peewee division, Dryland Marine, coached by Trevor Fawcett, captured both the league and playoff title as well, as they battled Inlet Raiders, coached by Colleen Vaughn, to a 13-11 win in the final.
MVP Kordell Vaughn pitched well for the Raiders and held the lead until the late innings.
He was matched by the pitching and clutch hitting of Dryland Marine MVP, Zack Phillips.
The final inning saw the Raiders get the tying run to the plate with one out, only to see Jordy Fawcett scoop up an infield hit and throw to first for the out, and a heads-up play by Jessie Phillips throwing to Mike Bunbury at home to double up the runner trying to score from third to clinch the win.
In the bantam division, GBS won the regular season title, but it was Flemming & Sombrowski, coached by Tony Watts and Danny Mayers, who defeated BA Blacktop 9-1 in the playoff final.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings with Brennan Mayers for Flemming and Kenny Tyson for BA both pitching fantastic games.
Jeremy Poulson had the big hit, a grand slam that changed the momentum of the game and Flemming never looked back.
The mini-mites and T-ball divisions also wrapped up their season.
The mini-mites were out on the main field to show off their young skills as they played a brief double header. T-ball players also had an enthusiastic game and then both divisions collected their hardware. Eight teams of smiling faces collected a trophy for a great season of fun.
"The whole weekend went very well, even though the weather was a bit iffy at times," said league president Randy Younghusband. "There was a nice vibe at the field. I think the parents appreciated seeing some good ball and certainly the players were all enjoying it. The games were very tight and we had some very competitive finals.
"In my first year as president, I thought overall, we had a very good season. Our volunteer team and our coaches all did a great job."
