After taking last year’s fast-pitch tournament season off, the Sunshine Coast Coho Kings were back in action last weekend at the 16-team Icebreaker Tournament in Kitsilano.
Rejuvenated by the addition of some youth and bolstered by the comeback of Jim “Weepy” Peers, the Coho Kings were in tough against their first opponent, the Meralomas Premier team, one of the teams favoured to win the tournament.
The Lomas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Coho Kings bounced back with a three-run homerun from Dave Moran, followed by a grand slam from Mitchell Rainer. With the Lomas caught off guard, the Coho Kings pulled off the upset, winning 7-6.
In the next game, the Coho Kings made a couple of errors, which the Richmond Steelers were able to capitalize on to win 2-1.
In their final round-robin game, the Coho bats came alive again with Mike Holmes, Mike Sopow and Mitchell Rainer all hitting triples. The Connaught Rangers had no answer for the Coho’s offence and the Coho Kings went on to win 10-3.
Their round robin performance earned them a bye into the semi-final where they ended up having a rematch against the Lomas’ Premier team. This time the Lomas were not caught off guard, and they won 3-0.
