Spikes and set reigned supreme last weekend during the annual Suncoast Cup Co-ed Volleyball Tournament at Chatelech Secondary School.

This year's event featured four teams from around the Coast. The four squads played a round robin during the morning with the top two teams playing in the championship round, while the third and fourth place teams played off in the consolation final.

Cogito Ergo Boom toppled the No Name team in the final while the Pender Pounders won the consolation final defeating Rockies Raccoons.

Event organizer Quinn Campbell said all of the teams had fun, but he was a little disappointed at the lack of entries.

"Typically this event has been run up in Pender Harbour," Campbell said. "When I called them to confirm our team's entry, we found out it might not run. We decided to take hold of the event and make sure it was held. It was a bit short notice and a few of the teams who normally enter just couldn't get a team together in time.

"Overall though, everyone had a good time and enjoyed the day. We want to see this tournament run again. Hopefully, Pender can take it back on again next year."

Volleyball season is in full swing on the Coast.

Campbell said the Sunshine Coast Volleyball Club (SCVC) is off and running again this year with six teams ranging in age from U13 to U18.

Practices for the six teams began in January, and most of the teams have played in a few warm-up tournaments.

Campbell said the U15 squad won a tournament in Langley recently and his U14 team played a mini-play day in Burnaby, finishing the round robin with a 5-0 record.

"This club just keeps building and building every year," Campbell said. "You are really starting to see the development in all the players. Kids who are now in Grade 9 and 10 are starting to see the benefits of this club."
