The Coaster mountain bike race, previously the Rat Race, returns to Roberts Creek this weekend, May 3 and 4.
On Saturday the mass-start, cross-country race leaves the SC Equestrian centre at B&K Road at the power lines at 10 a.m. The B&K will be closed just for a couple of minutes while the race crosses the road at the power lines.
This is a spectacle in itself, as racers from all over the province, the U.S.A. and a few Kiwis as well are taking part this year. The race takes in more than 40 km of trails going as far west as Field Road in Wilson Creek and finishes back at the equestrian centre.
The fastest pro racers are likely to be back in 2.5 hours, while those wanting to get some time in the saddle may take twice as long.
Racers and spectators will be treated to a salmon barbecue hosted by the SC Equestrian Club, and Townsite Brewery will alleviate their thirst.
While the pro racers are used to taking home cash, there are special cash prizes donated by Kris Sneddon for locals only, and local artist Sa Boothroyd’s coasters will be attached to trees throughout the course and are worth cash when brought in.
The Off the Edge run bike race goes at 1 p.m. in the corral. Bring your tot and run bike if you have one; if not, Gary has a few extras. The kids under 12 race starts just after the main start at 10:05 a.m. Register on site at 9 a.m. Racing is free for the U12 gang; however, they must have a parent present to sign a waiver. Their course is about four kilometres.
On Sunday, the infamous Mach Chicken is again the site of the downhill race.
There are still a few spots left, but this race is capped at 200, and is expected to sell out. Much trail work has been undertaken by our local riders to make this experience a good one for locals and off-Coast visitors.
You may encounter our directional arrows out on your favourite hiking trails, but please don’t move them — they will be gone shortly after the race.
