On Saturday, April 14 at Griffins Boxing and Fitness in North Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast Boxing Club (SCBC) had boxers in the ring for the first time this year.

Club founder Rick Shannon explained that the SCBC has moved its competitive boxers from Combsport to Boxing BC/Boxing Canada to access boxing opportunities from the grassroots level all the way to international competition as Coast boxing great Tony Duffy did in his day.

To introduce our boxers to Boxing BC’s format and function, the SCBC boxers boxed unscored exhibition bouts.

Middleweight Marcus Davies and lightweight Aiden McKenzie under the tutelage of coach Tariq Abdulrahman put on a great show for the audience.

McKenzie, boxing more experienced opponents, was forced to make good use of all his boxing tools and used them well, which goes a long way to develop him as a boxer.

In the best action fight of the night, Davies had a tough Vancouver fighter on the ropes and battered him for two and a half rounds until the referee stopped the fight as the Vancouver boxer was taking too many hard punches.

The Coast boxers used new headgear made possible through a donation from Custom Carpets.

Boxing BC has plenty of events coming up which will give our boxers opportunity to develop into national-level boxers, Shannon said.
