The Tier 1 Provincial Championships were held June 22 to 24 in Kelowna. Two Sunshine Coast Chinook Swim Club athletes, who had earlier this year competed and succeeded at the Lower Mainland Regionals in Richmond, qualified to attend.
Ava Hynd, 11, and Rory Scott, 12, qualified for the 12 and under girls and 13 and under boys, respectively. Both athletes participated in a total of eight races each over the three-day competition. The qualifying standards for this meet were based on the fastest 50 swimmers in the province from last season.
Rory achieved best times in seven swims. In the 200-metre backstroke, Rory got a Tier 1 best time of 2:52.75. But he is most proud of completing the 200-metre butterfly stroke in 3:07.31, ranking him 33rd in B.C.
Ava also achieved best times in seven swims. She is most proud of her 100 BK (backstroke) and 200 BK. Her time in 100 BK was 1:19.05 which ranks her fifth in the province and 17th in Canada. Her 200 BK time of 2:53.83 ranks her 37th in Canada and 16th in B.C. for those born in 2007.
