The Chatelech Eagles are off to the provincial high school golf championships next week at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club on Vancouver Island.
The Eagles secured the berth by finishing third behind St. Thomas More and Collingwood at the Vancouver and District zone tournament at the Fraserview Golf Club in Vancouver on May 15.
The individual results included: Keenan Flemming (Grade 9) 76, Jacob Bland (Grade 12) 81, Avery Struck (Grade 11) 82, Andrew Flockhart (Grade 12) 83, and Jordy Fawcett (Grade 9) 86.
"All the results were fairly typical for our players," said head coach Quinn Campbell. "On any given day, virtually anyone on our team could shoot mid to low 70s or mid to high 80s, it just depends on who's having a good day or who's struggling."
Campbell said overall the season has been a tremendous success.
"Going undefeated in the North Shore league regular season was a testament to the balance and consistency of our team," said Campbell. "That being said, our focus was always on making the playoffs and qualifying for provincials. We were in tough for the North Shore league playoffs in Squamish since we were without Avery. The league banner and trophy would have been nice to have, but again, our focus was solely on doing what we had to qualify for the zone playoffs the following week - and finishing second to Collingwood we did."
Just qualifying for the provincials is a huge deal for the Eagles as this might be only the third or fourth time a team from the school has qualified in 15 years.
"We're going into it with no pre-set expectations, other than for each team member to play their best," he said. "Golf is very much an individual sport, but the scoring system is set up for team play. Out of our five golfers competing, the top four scores on each day count for the team's score. If everyone plays well, we should be right in the mix with the best AA schools in the province."
The Eagles will head to Vancouver Island on Sunday and play a practice round with the tournament taking place Monday and Tuesday.
Along with the championships, there is a skills competition held on the Sunday during the practice round, and a banquet at the golf club Monday night.
Campbell said both the school and the parent advisory committee have stepped up in a big way to support the team and help offset some of the travel costs for the team.
