For the fourth straight year, the Chatelech ski/snowboard team is racing for gold at the provincial championships.
The boys' team of Jarret Porter, Jesse Day, Caleb Burnham and Graden Deasey and the girls' team of Alexa Houle, Anne Sturdy and Jezabelle Friedman-Joyal were in Kimberly this week for the provincial championships.
The giant slalom event saw some solid results as Jesse finished 24th, and Jaret 45th out of 61 racers, while Anne was 18th and Alexa was 19th out of 43 racers. The terrain GS was run on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time.
The Chat skiers have already tasted their fair share of success this season.
After multiple top-three finishes from several racers during the regular season, the team was poised for a strong finish at the North Shore zone finals on Feb. 16 in Whistler. Competing against schools from North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Squamish, the Chat team put down some strong results.
Grade 10 ski racer Jaques Martiquet went into the zone finals with a number of podium finishes during the regular season and placed 14th overall in the experienced boys' ski category.
The girls' team of snowboarders owned the podium by taking first, second and third, qualifying all three of them for the provincials.
And last weekend, just prior to the provincials, the Chat girls owned the podium again at the boarder-cross, ski-cross event in Whistler taking first through third, while Sonya Martiquet grabbed third place in girls' skiing. The boys' skiers also took second and third.
The Chat girls also won the North Shore banner in girls' snowboarding for their strong results during the season.
"The girls have really owned the podium the last couple of races. It's been a great season and I'm super proud of them," said coach Jamie Mani. "In winning the banner, that is a first for us in seven years of racing and is a huge accomplishment."
Mani said it has been a pretty hectic and busy few weeks, but the team is excited to be competing at provincials again.
