A poor opening day proved to be too much to overcome for the Chatelech golf team.
For the second straight year, Chat finished sixth at the provincial high school golf championships.
Day one of the two-day event in Creston, which started Monday, was difficult for the entire field.
Chat coach Dean Totten said high winds and poor weather conditions translated into very high scores.
"It was a long round for everyone," said Totten. "We finished 13 shots back of Rosland/Trail and were tied for fourth."
Rory Higdon fired the low round for Chat.
"If you wanted a positive spin, if we counted all five scores, we would have been in first. We had a great five-man team, just not the strongest four-man team," Totten added.
On day two, scores improved up and down the leader board as the weather conditions were ideal.
"We were better on day two, just not good enough," Totten said.
Rosland/Trail won the provincial title with a two-day score of 637, compared to 659 for Chat. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Lower Mainland's other entry, finished seventh, 20 shots behind Chat.
"To a man, we're all disappointed. All the guys know they could have played better, but there's always next year," he said.
And next year should be another strong one for Chat. They lose only one player, Danny Baker, who incidentally, was named the team's MVP this season.
Another bonus is that the provincial championships will be contested here on the Coast next year.
"Home course advantage was huge this year. Creston had a monster second day and finished second. We're hoping to use that to our advantage when the provincials are here next season," Totten added.
The golf team wishes to thank all the local businesses as well as both golf courses for their support throughout the season.
