The Chatelech golf team was one match victory away from heading to the provincial championships as Coast Reporter went to press Thursday night.

Chat was locked in a dog-fight with St. Thomas Moore (STM), St. Thomas Aquinas (STA), West Point Grey and Collingwood in round two of the two-round Lower Mainland qualifier.

Chat led after Wednesday's first round with a 314 score, four shots better than STM and six shots ahead of STA.

The top two teams qualify for the provincial championships next weekend in Kamloops.

"As you can see, there is much work to be done for the kids to make the provincials," said coach Dean Totten via email from Vancouver Wednesday night. "I am confident we can play well and advance."

If Chat does advance, the squad will be busy fundraising in preparation for the trip.

Anyone who would like to help the team out is encouraged to call Totten at 604-740-8210.

Chat advanced to the Lower Mainland qualifier by capturing the first round of the playoffs on Monday at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club.

Chat finished with a score of 319, 24 shots clear of second place STA.

Elphi misses playoffsElphi beat STA by a score of 4-3 on May 11 at the Sechelt Golf and Country Club to finish with a record of 3-3. Elphi lost out on the playoff spot as a result of their head-to-head loss against Collingwood earlier in the season.

"It's good and bad," said coach Jim Pringle. "It's frustrating that we beat STA to go to .500 but still couldn't advance to the playoffs. It was not our best season, but we've got a good young team and we look forward to next year."
