The Gibsons Minor Ball Association/Central Hardball mosquito wrapped up its season last weekend with its year-end tournament finals at Brothers Park in Gibsons.
After ending regular season play on June 11, the round-robin tournament started June 11. The A&W Athletics battled the IGA Blue Jays to determine the last tournament spot. A close game ended 13-10 in favour of the Blue Jays.
That set up the four teams for last weekend's finals - the Salish Cedar Axemen, Horsman Trucking, RJS Electrical Mariners and the Blue Jays.
First up on Saturday was Horsman Trucking who pulled out an 11-9 win over the Mariners.
Quinn Ewart led the way for Horsman with some solid hitting while the Mariners responded with sharp fielding as catcher Evan Griffin stole the show with a run down at home.
Next up were the Axemen who defeated the Blue Jays 10-5.
First year pitchers Andrew Hunt and Dakota Bjornson pitched solidly in the first five innings, holding the Blue Jays to a few runs. Jarred Bothwell hit a pair of home runs for the Axemen, while Riley Cousins and Ty Stinchcombe led the way for the Jays.
On Sunday, the Mariners and the Blue Jays squared off for third place.
The game went back and forth, and with pitch counts climbing, regular play ended in a 14-14 tie. After eight innings, the Mariners were victorious 26-18.
Horsman and the Axemen battled for gold in a thrilling final, won 5-4 by Horsman.
It was a pitchers' game as Cameron Longman dealt strikes for Horsman, and Quinn Girard answered with heat for the Axemen. The game was tied at four going into the bottom of the open sixth inning. A base hit by Liam Rankin ended in a RBI for Horsman that gave them the win.
