The first World Ice Skating Day will be taking place on Sunday, Dec. 4. This international day dedicated to celebrating ice skating across the world in the form of a global festival was recently launched by the International Skating Union.

Its mission is to reunite ice skaters of every level and spread the spirit of the sport worldwide. In doing so, the hope is to make ice skating sports inclusive, accessible, and fun for all.

This speaks to the core values of the Sunshine Coast Skating Club (SCSC), which has been providing quality programming to the Sunshine Coast community since 1981. The SCSC provides Try It Free programming semi annually as well as fun community events such as the beloved Halloween and Santa Skates. The SCSC has also provided the community with ice shows featuring guest skaters Elvis Stojko and Patrick Chan.

What makes this International Day of Skating extra special this season for the SCSC is that the global ambassador of World Ice Skating Day is Canadian Elladj Balde, whose charisma and passion for the sport of figure skating is contagious.

Elladj Balde will be performing in our ice show on March 11, 2023, with tickets going on sale in December.

Elladj co-founded the Figure Skating Diversity and Inclusion Alliance as well as the Skate Global Foundation, built around equity, diversity, inclusion, mental health, and climate change.

The SCSC board of directors would like to take this opportunity to thank our professional coaches, the skaters, and their parents/family members for making our club a fun, inspiring, inclusive, and safe environment each and every day.

Happy skating!
