The national women's volleyball team finished in seventh place at the Pan American Cup women's volleyball tournament in Lima, Peru.
Roberts Creek's Kyla Richey figured prominently in the results, which concluded with a three-game sweep of Peru. Richey finished with 10 points in the match.
Canada qualified for the quarter-finals with a three-game sweep of Costa Rica on June 12. Richey was the top scorer with 18 points.
Canada opened the tournament losing in five sets to Cuba on June 10, and then defeated Peru in five on June 11.
Canada lost in the quarters, nearly pulling off an upset over Brazil as they pushed the match to five sets. Richey again led Team Canada with 16 points.
Fastball
Lon's Gun Show beat Custom Carpet 5-1 on June 19 in Sunshine Coast Men's Fastball League action.
Eoin Ross continued to swing a hot bat as he led the Gun Show's offence, scoring two of the five runs.
On June 21, Gibsons Pirates beat Gilligan's Pub 10-8.
Terry Williams got another win for the Pirates pitching a complete game.
In other action, the Gibsons Coho Kings travel team was in Steveston for another tournament.
Coho Kings finished fourth, losing to the Surrey Rebels in the playoffs. The Rebels won the event.
Rob Dixon and Dave Moran hit the ball well with Moran going three for three in the final game. Steve Stevenson and Nate Petzold laid out for a couple of balls to make a couple of nice diving plays in what was otherwise a shaky defensive weekend for the club.
Dempster wins
Gibsons' Ryan Dempster improved to 5-8 on the season, helping the Boston Red Sox to an 11-4 win over the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night.
Dempster pitched six innings allowing only two runs on six hits.
The win halted a two-game losing streak for the right-hander who lost 6-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays on June 19 and 2-0 to the Baltimore Orioles on June 15.
