It was a weekend of good, not perfect weather and the golf course was just tough enough as competitors took to the links at the Sechelt Golf and Country Club for the 2011 Amateur Tournament June 11 and 12.
Jim Goodwin, a local favourite, had a two-shot lead over Pender Harbour's Lorne Campbell and 2010 club champion Jesse Satow after day one, while Jim Heney had a one-shot lead over 2010 senior champ Kevin Haynes. On the women's side, Sandy Vandenbrink of Calgary led from start to finish and won the women's championship. So on Sunday, all that was left to decide was the men's and senior men's champions.
Goodwin played well for the first nine holes, but a bogey on the short 10th hole and another on a very tough 11th hole, then a double bogey on the par five 12th made things interesting. Goodwin did compose himself and came back with birdies on 13 and 14, but Campbell played steady and was one over par through 16 holes.
Standing on the par three 17th, Campbell hit a beauty hybrid shot to within 12 feet and tapped it in for a birdie, bringing him to even par and the lead.
Campbell then played a great shot on the 18th and finished with a two putt par, putting the pressure on Goodwin who needed to chip in on the 18th to take things to a playoff. But his shot just slid by the hole and he missed the putt coming back, giving Campbell his first amateur title by two strokes.
In the senior's event, Heney played a smart and steady round of 77 on Sunday to claim the title.
