Roberts Creek's Julia Budd improved her mixed martial arts record to 2-1 with an impressive three-round win over Germaine de Randamie at the Strikeforce Challengers card at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash. on June 24.
All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Budd, to take the unanimous decision.
"She hits hard," Budd said after a post fight interview with the Canadian Press. "I wanted to wrestle her. I know it's not the best to watch, but you've got to do what you've got to got to do."
Budd used some good grappling control in the first two rounds to control De Randamie, a Dutch fighter who had won all 46 of her Muay Thai bouts. De Randamie got on top in the third round and started to gain the advantage, but Budd was able to escape and get De Randamie on her back. This proved to be the key point in the bout and the moment that put Budd over the top on the judges' scorecards.
The fight was the first women's contest under the Zuffa banner since the UFC's parent company took over Strikeforce in March.
Jim Budd is senior champ
The good news continued this week for the Budd family as Jim Budd fired a sizzling 31 on the back nine to capture his third senior men's golf championship last weekend at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club.
Ian Williams was the overall net champion, while Doug Watson was the senior/senior net champion. See the sports ticker on page 54 of the printed edition for all the tournament results.
Dempster throws a gem, gets bombed by Phillies
Gibsons Ryan Dempster continued his recent run of success with a 2-1 win over the Florida Marlins last Friday at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Dempster went eight innings, allowing no runs on eight hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. The win moved Dempster to 7-6 on the season.
But Dempster did not fare well on Wednesday afternoon as he was bombed by the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley.
Dempster went only three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks, as Philadelphia won 9-1 to even Dempster's record at 7-7.
His next start should be Tuesday when the Cubs head to Milwaukee for a series against the Brewers.
