Budd back in the ring

Sechelt's Julia Budd returns to the squared circle next Friday night in Vancouver.

A world championship kickboxing event is slated for the PNE Agrodome with a full card of action.

Budd was originally slated to take on Natalie Fuz for the North American Muay Thai kickboxing title, but Fuz dropped out earlier this week.

Budd will now face a top-ranked female boxer in next Friday's contest.

"It's too bad Natalie dropped out," Budd said in a phone interview Tuesday from Vancouver. "This often happens. A fighter has to drop out for various reasons and the cards have to change. I'm just glad to be getting back into the ring."

Since last June when Budd captured the Canadian Muay Thai title in Calgary, she has concentrated on training and finishing her studies at the University of British Columbia majoring in kinesiology.

Just by chance, she has recently started sparring with a top ranked boxer as a complement to her Muay Thai training.

"It's going to be a bit of an adjustment to the boxing from the Muay Thai, but I'm ready for the challenge," Budd said. "It's kind of ironic that I've been boxing lately as part of my training. It's still going to be a tough fit, but I'm prepared for anything."

Budd says she hopes to get another shot at Fuz later in June for the North American title.

Tickets for the fight night next Friday in Vancouver are available through TicketMaster at 1-604-280-4444.
