The Lighthouse/IGA Brewers captured the 2013 Sunshine Coast Men's Fastball League title Sunday afternoon with a 12-7 win over Lon's Gun Show at Hackett Park in Sechelt.
The Brewers completed a near perfect season as they lost only once - on Sunday morning during the playoff tournament.
"It was a good weekend. We had to come a bit through the back door, but it worked out well," said team spokesperson Dan Hemstalk. "In the final we were pretty steady. We scored early and that always helps. Brad Kohuch was real clutch for us, and Bill Stockwell pitched a great game. It was a pretty good team effort all around."
And that "good team effort" was showcased throughout the season.
"We had a good mixture of veteran players and young players. The whole season was a lot of fun," Hemstalk said.
Gun Show spokesman Mike Sopow said the Brewers were the best team all year and deserved to win, but wished his team would have provided a better match-up in the final.
"Errors killed us and we were just not there in the final," Sopow said.
The playoff tournament started Saturday morning with Custom Carpet beating the RJS Blue Jays and Gun Show beating Gilligan's Pub to stay in the top half of the bracket.
The Brewers then beat Custom and the Gun Show beat the Gibsons Pirates setting up a Brewers/Gun Show match up Sunday morning.
Later on Saturday afternoon, Gilligan's beat Custom for their first win of the season, sending Custom to the Beer Cup final on Sunday against the Blue Jays who were knocked out of the main tournament bracket by the Pirates on Saturday night. Custom won the Beer Cup beating RJS by eight runs on Sunday afternoon.
In the first game Sunday, Gun Show beat Brewers 4-2 thanks to a Mike Husband double and a nifty steal of third and home and a Sopow home run. That win advanced the Gun Show straight to the final and knocked the Brewers into the second semifinal against the Pirates.
In that game, the Brewers battled back, scoring five runs in their last at bat to take the win and advance to the final rematch against the Gun Show.
