Former national-level amateur and professional boxer Ben Smith is once again offering participants the opportunity to learn the basics of boxing in a controlled program.
"Everyone who commits for eight weeks has learned the basics of boxing," Smith said.
The Learn to Box program provides participants the opportunity to learn the basics of boxing, which can improve self-esteem, sport performance and the ability to defend oneself, said Smith. In addition, bodybuilding, nutrition and thought management tips round out the program.
Classes are starting now, running every Tuesday and Thursday and will end the week before Christmas. Classes take place from 7 to 8 p.m. both nights at Sunshine Fitness in Gibsons.
Hardly your typical local gym's boxercise class, participants partner up and take turns boxing, slipping and ducking while their partners perfect the latest combination.
"By the end of the 16 progressive sessions, participants will have grasped the basics of boxing including combinations punching, defence, setting up combos and effective footwork and movement," Smith said. "Not to mention you get a chance to spar with me a bit, get a great workout, have some fun and feel good about yourself."
Prior to this program, Smith's training was focused on personally qualifying for the 2000 Olympic team. He then decided to take his experience earned as an amateur into the professional ring. That experience, coupled with Smith's certified coaching and personal training skills as well as other programs on the Coast, has allowed him to formulate this boxing program, which is growing in popularity and one that he is very proud of.
