Bonspiel season in full swing

The Gibsons Curling Club has been rocking the past few weekends with a pair of major bonspiels. The mixed bonspiel was held Jan. 28 to 30 and featured 19 teams, six from off-Coast.

Team Wannamaker (Jared Wannamaker, skip; Juanita Wannamaker, third; Ken Johnson, second; and Carol Skytte, lead) got off to a shaky start in the A final against the Andrew Bilesky team from New Westminster, but came back to score two in the second and stole points in every end after that for an 8-3 win.

First in the B event was the Jim Fitzsimmons rink from Gibsons (Elaine Tattrie, third; John Lowden, second; and Nadine Lowden, lead), followed by the Christine Younghusband rink in second spot. Her rink consisted of Norm Card, third; Liz O'Brian, second; and Randy Younghusband, lead.

The C event was won by the Gauthier rink from Royal City in New West, but the Kevan Penonzek rink from Gibsons finished second (Carol Hickman, third; Rod Hickman, second; Connie Dignard, lead).

Third in the C event was the Darren Kopeck rink (Sylvia Kopeck, third; and Samantha Mills, lead.

The men's bonspiel was held Jan. 13 to 15 and featured 21 rinks with eight off-Coast teams.

The Wannamaker rink won the A event (Jared Wannamaker, skip; Dwayne Clegg, third; Ken Johnson, second; and Howie Larsen, lead). Second in the A event went to the Barry Meyer rink (Kevan Penonzek, third; Rod Hickman, second; and Cameron Johnston, lead). The team are all former members of the Gibsons Curling Club now curling out of the Royal City Club.

Third in the A event was the Gatzke rink from Gibsons and fourth was the Claxton rink from Langley.

The B event was won by the Senay rink from Gibsons, followed by the Lesik rink from Gibsons in second and Kopeck from Gibsons in third.

The C event was won by the Todosychuck rink from Gibsons, second went to the Erichison rink from Gibsons while the third and fourth spots went to teams from Hollyburn.

Up next is the women's bonspiel at the end of the month.
