The countdown is on in the women's league to keep Blazers from posting an undefeated season.
Last week the Blazers shut out Mayhem 4-0 on the strength of two goals from Ashley Taylor and singles from Astrid Bradbury and Christine Campbell.
In other games, the Banana Peppers couldn't match last week's win, as they lost 6-2 to Ya Yas.
Banana Peppers' Christie Bliss ran past the defence and then dribbled on past the keeper, while fullback Katie Edwardson blasted in a beauty from 20 yards out. No goal scorers were reported for the Ya Yas.
At Connor Park, Source continued to roll with a 5-1 win over Fusion. Source goals came from Jane Van Klinken, Tara Sweet, Jenna Phelps and a pair from Kara McDonnell, while Fusions' goal came from Melissa Redfield.
In men's league action at Lions Park, Wolves beat the Pender Harbour Bananas 8-3.
Although this time last year, Pender had won every game right up until Christmas, this year the league appears to be getting charged up for every match with the Banana boys. Like Britney Spears, the underdog Bananas never adapted well to the spotlight, nor looked good with shaved heads.
Wolves got a blast from the past as dogged veteran Trent Dixon scored not one, not two, but three goals, as did 'Flyin' Ryan Paul. Singles came from Thomas Bitting and Junior Dixon. Bananasgot good defence from Josh Young, who may not be as young as he used to be, but he definitely isn't joshing when he lines up pesky incoming strikers on his radar.
At Connor Park, CPU bested Halfmoon Bay 5-1 with CPU getting a pair of strikes from Ken Campbell, and singles from Kurt Vernon and Fumi Takahashi. Halfmoon Bay got on the board when Jesse Morantz ran in on net to pop one just inside the post, while rolling keeper Glen Coady got mud caked for his effort. Backlines haven't been plagued by speed like this since Sean Whalen left the league.
Ridgepoint edged Chiefs 3-1, as Mike Sopow bent his corner kick into the net and new guy Jason Wilson came out scoring, while Mike Husband settled a ball then put it awaywhile maintainingthe calmness and precision of an Sunshine Coast Regional District transit driver. Chiefs' Curtis Craigan continues to dominate midfields as he scored for the Chiefs.
The league is still looking for players to fill out its rosters, so if any other over-30 men are interested in playing soccer, check out the men's soccer league link at www.deeprooted.ca.
