The Rogers Rookie Tour Camp is coming to the Sunshine Coast, and young tennis players are invited to get in on the fun.
The Rogers Rookie Tour is a national program designed to bridge the gap between entry-level tennis and the provincial competitive junior circuit. Rookie Tour events have met with a great deal of success in many provinces, which has led to the development of a national program based on the Rookie Tour concept.
Participants will improve their skills and fitness level and their understanding of the game. The tour stops in Sechelt at the Suncoast Racquet Club on Saturday, Sept. 11, and is open to all players aged seven to 13.
Club coach Jacques Joyal said he is thrilled the tour is coming to the Coast.
"Tennis BC called us a while back and offered the club, through Tennis Canada, some funding and equipment to run our summer programs," Joyal said. "As part of that funding and support, the Rogers Rookie Tour would make a stop at our club. It's a national program and a great event for entry-level players to try out the sport."
Joyal stresses that the one-day event is not a highly competitive tournament but a chance for young players to play a series of matches against their own skill and age levels.
The seven, eight and nine age groups will play on a three-quarter court with a softer, transition ball, while full court matches will take place for those aged 10 to 13.
Entry fee is $26. Players must register by Sept. 7. To register or for more details, call Joyal at 604-741-7858.
