The bantam division rounded out the three-week Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association (SCMHA) spring break tournaments last weekend in Gibsons.
After finishing the round robin 4-0, the Whistler Winter Hawks completed their perfect weekend, defeating the Mission Thunder in the final. Mission finished tied with the North Shore Hawks and Powell River with 2-2 records in the round robin. Powell River won the third place game over North Shore. Mission won the team trophy for the skills competition held on Saturday morning.
The Sunshine Coast Blues had a tough weekend going 0-4 in the round robin and out of the playoffs.
"We have had a lot of positive feedback from the participants in all three divisions," said Roger Munn, assistant tournament director for SCMHA. "We have received numerous emails with accolades and appreciation for a well run tournament and several teams have enquired about the dates for next year's tournament as they plan on returning again. There are some growing pains as our tournament program is still in its infancy, but overall I would say this year ran smoothly as we were able to take the lessons from last year and carry them forward."
Munn said they did not have as many teams involved in a couple of the divisions, due to spring break and the Winter Olympics.
"We have had a tremendous amount of community support with so many local businesses coming forward to help us out in a variety of ways - donating merchandise, helping with funding, assisting us with the operating costs through purchasing advertising space in our program and donating services to help put the event together," he said.
"I can not say enough about our volunteers. Without these folks there is no way we could host events of this magnitude. Since we hosted three different divisions over three different weekends, it took a great deal of effort by many to make it all happen. There were a few parent volunteers who went well above and beyond and were a large part of why this year was such a success."
