The Elphinstone bantam girls ended their season with a flourish Feb. 1 by edging Don Ross Secondary in Brackendale (Squamish) 34-30.
Elphi didn't play nearly as well as they had in their recent home tournament, but managed to build a nine-point lead in the second half before the Don Ross press forced several turnovers and narrowed the lead to two.
After a time-out with 18 seconds left, the Cougars got the ball to Cheyenne Mawby who scored with five seconds on the clock to clinch the victory.
Cheyenne and Arielle Vourtsis each scored six points, Hannah Smith counted 11, Starr Rairie four, Katherine Mernett three, and Shala Fitzgerald and Megin Houle had two each. Megin's basket, a spectacular left-handed layup, came at a key point late in the game when Don Ross was making a comeback.
For the season, Hannah and Starr were the top scorers, while Jessie Rydde grabbed the most rebounds.
The bantam boys finished their season with a 60-41 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Feb. 2.
In junior boys action, Chatelech Eagles completed their season losing 55-28 to Suth-erland and 53-17 to Windsor in games played on the North Shore on Feb. 1 and dropped a 68-25 decision to Sentinel on Feb. 3.
In juvenile girls action, the Cougars dropped a 60-18 game to West Van at home on Feb. 1, and rebounded with a 34-30 win on Feb. 2 to close out their regular season. The Cougars are still waiting to see if they will make the North Shore playoffs.
