Athletes pumped for excellence camps

About 40 people came out to participate in a 10-station general fitness test hosted by SC Spirit of Excellence (SCSOE) at the Gibsons Community Centre on Saturday, April 21.

Athletes from ages 4 to 14 tested their athletic abilities when challenged in long and high jumps, a 40-yard dash, various agility and balance exercises as well as core and strength tests.

Each participant received their individual test result sheet to compare their performance to a second general fitness test coming up on June 3 supporting National Health and Fitness Day.

Parents enjoyed watching their children excel in a fun yet challenging setting with clear instructions on how to improve their technique.

The energy of instructors Dan Kasperski and Birgit Breuer set the tone for this fun two-hour long event on the arena dry-floor. Upbeat music made even the youngest athletes work harder and put big smiles on everybody's face.

SCSOE is offering new high quality programs for all sports to Sunshine Coast students ages 8 to 18.

The signature program is the high performance athlete program (HPAP), which is an introduction to learning how to become a high performance athlete in any sport. The HPAP program includes instruction from former and current professional athletes, coaches and instructors from various levels of high performance sport.

This program combines speed, agility, strength, stamina, nutrition and leadership and life skills training with an introduction to multi-sport athlete training using ball and stick sports.

Boys and girls combined for ages 9 to 18 and for athletes of any sport. Participants are placed in appropriate age and ability groups during each session.

There will also be Super Skills summer day camps, which focus on two related sports each week in July, Adventure Outdoor Camps such as beach volleyball or outrigger canoeing throughout August and an all year round athletic development program starting in September with the beginning of the new school year.

The SC Spirit of Excellence website just went live at www.scsoe.ca and there is more info at www.facebook/SpiritofExcellence/events.
