The Sunshine Coast Arena is the place to be this month as hockey gets into full swing next weekend.
The third annual Sun-shine Coast Summer Hockey School starts Friday, Aug. 11, with a three-day elite camp designed for players playing peewee rep or higher.
On-ice training starts Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, another on-ice session from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., dry land training from 1:30 to 2:30 and another ice session from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m.
Sunday the camp concludes with on-ice training from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., dry land training from 1:30 to 2:30 and the final on-ice session from 3 to 5 p.m.
The main camp, open to any player from beginner to midget division, takes place from Aug. 21 to 25. The full schedule is still being finalized based on player registration.
The main camp runs for the full five days and includes on-ice training and dry land training with things like swimming, golf, soccer and lacrosse.
Instructors for the camp should include Brad Wingfield and Ryan Esselmont, who were instructors last year, and junior players David Arduin and Aaron Portman.
"At the arena this summer, we are offering lots of scrub hockey, which I think will be great for those interested in the Elite camp," said arena programmer and camp co-ordinator Tom Poulton.
"Scrub hockey can be a great cardio exercise and a time to have fun and play the game with your friends. I highly recommend that players do not try to substitute scrub hockey for the hockey schools we hold at the arena. Scrub hockey is great, but working on the skills with qualified instructors is so important to a player's development."
