It's a new year, which means a time to try out and sign up for new things.

The Chinook Swim Club is accepting new members, and for all those who love swimming, an exciting opportunity is coming up on the Coast.

The Chinook Swim Club, along with the junior lifeguard club and the Coast's water polo club, is hosting an aquatic club demo day at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre this Sunday, Jan. 15, from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The Coast's swim clubs offer excellent opportunities for all children who can swim a length of the pool to improve fitness and receive expert coaching, all in a fun and inclusive environment. If you've ever wanted to improve your swimming technique, learn to swim faster or just meet new friends who also love to swim, then come on down to the pool and pay general admission to find out what these clubs are all about.

Elphi wrestling

2012 started off in grand style for a number of wrestlers from Elphinstone Secondary School.

Alysha Monk and Alex Ratcliff were both selected, along with former Elphi wrestler Brandi Perry, to represent B.C. at a dual meet against competitors from Ontario.

"This was Alysha's and Alex's first opportunity to wrestle on a provincial team, and both won their match," said Elphi coach Clint Fox. "While they are not permanent fixtures on the team, this opportunity gave them the chance to be coached by Canada's national team coach and to gain valuable experience wrestling at a higher level."

This week both Alysha and Alex were competing at the North Shore all-star tournament and at the Terry Fox Ravens invitational tournament in Port Coquitlam.

Senior swimming

It may be seven months away, but the Sunshine Coast Senior Games swim team is already preparing for the event.

The team, which swims, trains and has fun at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre every Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. is seeking more active members to join its team for the Senior Games Aug. 21 to 25 in Burnaby.
