Halfmoon Bay resident Dan Kasperski and Birgit Breuer from Gibsons are launching an exciting new venture called "Sunshine Coast Spirit of Excellence" (SCSOE) to build community spirit in sports and arts with the help of local sports professionals and organizations.
The first goal is to build athletes for all sports groups and leaders in the community. The mid-term goal is to brand the Sunshine Coast as a destination for sports, arts and adventure to people and organizations around the world.
Kasperski has an impressive 17-year background as a professional player in hockey and baseball, coach, scout and multi-sport skills instructor.
His goal is to create long lasting relationships and help children, youth and adults reach their dreams and goals in sports, arts and life.
Breuer was raised in Munich, Germany. At 18 she was accepted to the University of Sport at the Olympic Centre and the University of Technology in Munich where she received a sports diploma specialized in sports medicine and also a teaching degree. She worked in the arts/entertainment industry for Sony BMG Entertainment in Europe and CBS Cable Networks USA when her private pilot licence training brought her to Victoria. She has taught sports at a variety of institutions in Europe and since she had her two daughters Carina (10) and Julia (8) she has coached Sunshine Coast children in cross country skiing, track and field, volleyball, basketball and soccer.
SCSOE is offering a free general fitness testing day for all ages next Saturday, April 21, at 5 p.m. at the Gibsons Community Centre. Running, jumping and agility will be tested in a fun way and eager athletes will receive an initial athlete's profile.
SCSOE plans to launch its new programs on April 30, which will turn into all-year programming by fall and will include a multi-sport fitness and leadership program, four super skills summer camps in July, three-on-three super skills hockey and soccer camps April through June and indoor soccer.
SCSOE is working closely with the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Register at www.scrd.ca/Activities or call 604-886-6591 for more information.
