Grade 10 Elphinstone Secondary School student Michelle Jakszuk had a summer to remember - and it wasn't just about getting a suntan on the beach.
Her summer volleyball success started back in May when she attended the U16 women's Baden Cup tryouts in Burnaby. The chosen few, Michelle among them, advanced to the Baden Cup tournament/selection camp in Kamloops, July 4 to 8. Other tryouts were held throughout the province.
The Baden Cup brings together top volleyball players from B.C. to train with some of the top coaches in the province. Eighty players were at the selection camp with 30 chosen to stay at Thompson Rivers University for further training July 9 to 21. Halfway through the training program, 24 players, including Michelle, were chosen to Team B.C. and travelled to Calgary to play in the Western Elite Champ-ionships July 22 to 25.
After a successful trip to Calgary, Michelle hit the beach Aug. 14 and 15, finishing sixth with her partner at the provincial beach volleyball championships held at Spanish Banks.
A member of the Elphi school senior girls team and the Sunshine Coast Volleyball Club, Michelle is another solid up-and-coming volleyball star on the Coast.
