A day of speed, sun and smoke

Sun drenched fans were treated to a day of speed and smoke at the Sechelt Airport on Sunday.

The Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) presented its first drag racing event of the season - Mayhem in May - and despite a few computer glitches in the afternoon, the event went off without a hitch.

"It was a great day. The sun was shining all day and the crowds had a lot of fun," said SCDRA media liaison and track announcer Jac Cawsey.

"We started the day with a drivers' meeting. That's where we check all the cars and make sure they are legal for the strip. We have a meeting with the drivers and go over all the rules and how we run things. Then we just start calling them to the line and let them go. All of the drivers had five runs. We try to give them as many runs before we hit eliminations."

The event drew drivers from all over the Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Delta, Richmond, Surrey, Victoria and as far away as Sardis.

"No one got hurt and it was a safe, fun day and that's the main thing," added SCDRA president Wayne Taylor. "This is what we like about this short track. The speeds stay down, but the thrill is still the same. The crowd was great and I think everyone had a great day."

Another aspect of the day was the youth and family involvement.

"We had two 18-year-old guys. One came in second and the other was just eliminated and came in third," added Cawsey."To me, this event is keeping kids off the street. It's showing them where to race here. It's a good sign that kids are taking it seriously."

Sunshine Coast drivers swept the hardware.

In street rod, Mike McConnachie from Gibsons was first, followed by Grant Gunn of Roberts Creek.

In super street, Brad Robinson of Roberts Creek took first, followed by Lani Murphy of Gibsons.

Dale Ingram of Gibsons was first in hot rod, followed by Nick Bergnach of Gibsons.

Colin Stracker of Sechelt was first in street machine, followed by Graham Porter of Halfmoon Bay. The junior dragster honours went to Nicole Pearson of Sechelt, followed by Jessica Girard from Surrey.
