Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Aug. 21 to 27:
On Aug. 16, a thief stole a "Salus Abicus" brand personal floatation device and an iPhone 4S while the owner was working at Dougall Park in Gibsons. The personal floatation device is described as being a rare edition, sleek and black. The iPhone is also black and was in a camouflage-patterned case and had a "Cromag" sticker on it.
On Aug. 21, a thief gained entry into a possibly unlocked vehicle parked in the 5700 block of Mermaid Street in Sechelt. The thief stole a Nikon D60 digital camera, two lenses, a camera bag and several memory cards. The vehicle owner located an unknown item inside the car that was presumably left behind by the thief and has turned the item over to the police.
On Aug. 21 a hit and run was reported in the 5500 block of Highway 101 after a female driver backed out of a parking stall and hit a waiting vehicle, despite warning honks, causing minor damage to both vehicles. The offending vehicle drove off without stopping, but the other driver was able to take down the vehicle's licence plate.
RCMP located the suspect vehicle and registered owner and noted the damage. The registered owner was issued a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of motor vehicle accident.
On Aug. 21 and 22, two separate reports of a possible prowler were received from the 4500 block of Stalashen Drive in Wilson Creek. In both cases, nothing was stolen or damaged, but one complainant saw someone with a flashlight in his yard and heard the sound of a possible wagon or similar item being pulled. Police attended and made extensive patrols, but no suspicious persons were located.
Sometime in the last couple of months, a thief stole a red Clipper canoe from the 1900 block of Lower Road in Roberts Creek.
Overnight on Aug. 22, a thief gained entry to two unlocked vehicles parked in the 7800 block of Redrooffs Road in Halfmoon Bay.
The thief stole a black CD binder with Radiohead stickers on it, 20 packs of powdered juice, some change, and a black Roots backpack containing a flashlight with the owner's name on it.
On Aug. 22, a single-vehicle accident occurred after a vehicle heading eastbound on Sechelt Inlet Road came around the corner and had to swerve to avoid a westbound vehicle driving in the wrong lane. The eastbound vehicle ended up in the ditch; fortunately, no injuries or damage was reported.
The driver of the westbound vehicle remained on the scene and advised he was visiting from England and had briefly forgotten where he was and was driving on the wrong side of the road. The tourist was warned about his driving.
On Aug. 24, a piece of water recreational equipment fell off a vehicle travelling north on Highway 101 near Lower Road. The following vehicle driver stopped to pick up the item and attempted to locate the owner, but the vehicle drove away before any licence plate could be noted. The owner may claim with detailed description, by calling 604-885-2266 and reference RCMP file 2012-5913.
On Aug. 25, a shoplifter was caught at a business attempting to steal a large amount of make-up in the 5500 block of Highway 101. The shoplifter, who was cooperative with police, was arrested for theft and issued a promise to appear for court and an undertaking to not attend the business.
On Aug. 25, a thief stole a purse from an address in the 200 block of Gower Point Road in GIbsons. Witnesses reported seeing an unknown male wearing a grey sweatshirt and baseball cap entering the building and quickly leaving during the short period the purse went missing. The owner cancelled all her credit cards and learned a fraudulent attempt to use it had occurred in the Lower Mainland. The purse also contained an Olympus digital camera.
On Aug. 27, a single-vehicle accident occurred when a learner driver, travelling with her father on Highway 101 near Delair Road, lost control of the SUV she was driving when she tried to pull over to the side of the roadway to allow vehicles to pass her.
Witnesses observed the SUV driving very slowly as it veered into the ditch, which was very deep. The vehicle was heavily damaged. The driver, along with a passenger, was transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Charges were not laid due to the circumstances leading up to the accident.
