Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 19 to Feb. 26:
On Feb. 19, a theft of wood was reported at an address in the 6200 block of Trout Lake Road after a witness saw suspects load wood onto a vehicle.
Police located the suspects, who advised the log had already fallen and that they didn't believe the log was on private property. The suspects, who did not have a wood cutters permit, were advised that they had committed theft of wood, and the wood was seized.
On the evening of Feb. 20, police received a report of a cyclist biking erratically all over Highway 101 in Wilson Creek. Police attended and observed the cyclist, who is known to police, weaving in the middle of the highway obstructing traffic.
Police stopped the cyclist, who was found to be in an intoxicated state, and arrested him for being intoxicated in public. The male suspect was taken to cells to sober up and was issued violation tickets for being intoxicated in a public place, careless cycling and cycling without lights after dark.
On Feb. 21, a hit and run was reported on Highway 101 near Madeira Park Road after a southbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and headed into the southbound ditch. The driver overcorrected and sideswiped a northbound vehicle before ending up in the northbound ditch.
The driver of the northbound vehicle stopped to exchange information with the southbound driver, but the southbound driver backed his vehicle out of the ditch and fled the scene. The driver was located a short time later and found to be exhibiting signs of intoxication. The Class 7 driver was given a roadside alcohol-screening test and as the results showed there was alcohol in his system, the driver was issued a 12-hour driving suspension as well as a violation tickets for fail to remain at the scene of an accident and driving contrary to conditions.
His damaged vehicle was towed.
On Feb. 21, a witness reported a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101 at Roberts Creek Road. An officer located the vehicle and witnessed it swerve towards the right shoulder and then correct. The vehicle then swerved into the on-coming lane and narrowly missed a head-on collision with a northbound vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle and found the driver to be impaired by prescription drugs. The file is still under investigation.
Between Feb. 20 and 21, a thief stole a safe from a business in the 1000 block of Venture Way in Gibsons. The yellow safe contained some cash.
On Feb 23, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 12800 block of Madeira Park Road. The suspect was seen leaving the business with a large number of items she had not paid for. When confronted by staff, the suspect denied the theft, claiming she hadn't been given a receipt and refused to cooperate further before driving away. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.
On Feb. 25, an officer located a still-running vehicle in the ditch on Chamberlin Road in Gibsons with a lone occupant in the driver's seat. The driver, who was unhurt, exhibited signs of intoxication and was given a roadside alcohol-screening test, which resulted in a 'fail' reading. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
On Feb. 25, a thief stole two bicycles from an address in the 700 block Tricklebrook Way in GIbsons. One bike is described as a black Specialized BMX and the second is a mountain bike with a camouflage seat and a black fish on the frame.
On Feb. 25, police responded to a mischief call on the Forest Service Road off Menacher Road after BC Hydro workers reported two hydro line poles on fire. Police located a large amount of spent shotgun and .22-calibre ammo (both spent and live) in the area, as well as numerous beer bottles. An uninsured vehicle was also found in the area. The file is still under investigation.
