Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for July 17 to July 24:
On July 17, police responded to an alarm at a business in the 5600 block of Highway 101 and found someone had driven into the front doors, setting off the alarms, but no entry had been gained and nothing was stolen.
Police located the suspect vehicle and driver a short time later and the driver told officers that it wasn't a break and enter, but that he had panicked after he backed up without looking and smashed the doors.
The driver, who exhibited signs of intoxication, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test that resulted in a 'warn' reading. The driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision resulting in property damage.
On July 17, on Cowrie Street near Trail Avenue in Sechelt, a witness reported a hit and run after a truck backed into a parked vehicle.
The driver of the truck got out of the vehicle and looked at the struck vehicle, but left without leaving his information for the vehicle owner. The witness noted the truck left a long scratch on the parked vehicle. The witness provided licence plate numbers for both vehicles and police are following up with the owners.
On July 3, a baby stroller was found behind a building in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue in Sechelt. The stroller will be kept for 90 days at which point, if no owner comes forward, it will be disposed of. Owner may claim with detailed description, reference file 12-4755 by calling RCMP at 604-885-2266.
On July 18, some campers found a marine marker washed up on the beach in the 3900 block of Highway 101. Marine markers are labelled with an advisory to contact military or police if found. Police attended and after consulting the military explosives unit, secured the marker and transported it back to the detachment for safekeeping until the military could collect it.
For their own safety, the public is reminded not to touch or move or store any found marine markers, but to contact the proper authorities immediately.
On July 19, an officer witnessed a vehicle speeding southbound on Highway 101 at Belair Road. Radar confirmed the vehicle was travelling more than 20 km over the posted speed limit.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and upon approach to the vehicle, noted an overwhelming smell of marijuana. The driver advised she had not been smoking, and appeared sober, but two passengers who showed signs of recent marijuana use admitted to smoking the drug.
The driver was warned against having occupants in her vehicle use marijuana and of possible driving suspensions. The driver was issued a violation ticket for speed against a highway sign.
A two-vehicle accident occurred in the 4800 block of Highway 101 after a northbound vehicle stopped behind another vehicle waiting to make a left turn off the highway was rear-ended by a third vehicle.
The "N" driver of the third vehicle advised that she had been looking down at her cup holder to get her drink and it was her passengers who alerted her to the vehicle stopped in front of her. The driver tried to brake, but was too close and slammed into the back-end of the vehicle. No injuries were reported, but the struck vehicle sustained major damage. The driver of the third vehicle was issued a violation ticket for following too close and driving contrary to restrictions.
On July 21, an on-duty officer performed a traffic stop near Cowrie Street and Ocean Avenue in Sechelt with a vehicle associated to a male the officer had seen intoxicated earlier in the evening. The officer found a female in the driver's seat and determined the female was also exhibiting signs of intoxication. The female admitted that she did not have a valid driver's licence, and to consuming alcohol that evening. She was given a roadside alcohol-screening test that resulted in a 'fail' reading.
The female is being charged for driving while prohibited and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was impounded.
Late on July 21, an on-duty officer heard a vehicle squealing its tires and someone hollering as the vehicle drove past him on Shaw Road near Gibsons Way.
The officer pulled the vehicle over and noticed the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who admitted to having had a few drinks, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test that resulted in a 'fail' reading. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.
A custom-made black canvas boat cover was reported lost somewhere on Highway 101 between Sechelt and Ruby Lake. The brand new cover has the maker name "Great Lakes" on the snap covers and consists of two pieces that were rolled up into a bundle.
Sometime on July 21, a thief gained entry to a vehicle parked on Joe Road near Lower Road in Roberts Creek and stole a black purse containing two wallets. No other items were stolen and the owner has cancelled all bank and credit cards.
Overnight on July 23, a thief broke into a facility in the 5600 block of Highway 101 and stole a large amount of redeemable empty beer, pop and wine bottles stored in a dozen or so light bags. It appears the thief gained entry by kicking in a lightly secured door.
