Sechelt’s downtown core will be transformed into a pedestrian-only playground on Saturday, Sept. 6, as the Car-Free on Cowrie Street Festival returns for its second year.

Organized by Transportation Choices Sunshine Coast (TraC) in partnership with the District of Sechelt and local businesses, the event runs from 12 to 4 p.m. and promises an afternoon of music, food, and community spirit.

Last year’s event drew more than 800 attendees, and organizers are hoping to build on that momentum.

Cowrie Street will be closed to vehicles from Sunshine Coast Highway to Trail Avenue, creating space that supports a mix of activities.

Event highlights include live music from local band Them Ordinary Things, an expanded beer and cider garden, and a variety of food trucks and local eats.

Attendees can also enjoy bike polo, medieval sword fighting, street hockey, face painting, games, and community exhibitors. Free bike tune-ups, a bike valet, and a “Pedal & Polish” bike display will cater to cycling enthusiasts.

“This is about more than closing the street to cars — it’s about opening it up to community,” said Martin Prestage, event director, in a press release. “We want people to see what downtown Sechelt can feel like when it’s all about people, music, and fun.”

TraC, a volunteer-led nonprofit, promotes active and sustainable transportation across the Sunshine Coast. The group’s initiatives include the Connect the Coast multi-use path and the Sunshine Coast Slow Food Cycle.
