Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for July 23 to 30:
On July 23, police located a male sleeping in his vehicle parked in the middle of Highway 101 near Norwest Bay Road in Sechelt.
The male, who was exhibiting signs of extreme intoxication, refused to take a roadside alcohol-screening test and issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver's vehicle was impounded for 30 days and he was lodged in cells at the RCMP detachment until sober.
Some time in the past two weeks, a thief stole a boat that had been moored at a private dock on Gambier Island. The boat is a 23-feet long blue and white Wellcraft. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to call RCMP at 604-885-2266 and reference file 13-4914.
Just after midnight on July 24, a would-be-thief broke into a residence in the 5700 block of Mermaid Street in Sechelt. The suspect gained entry into the lit up residence through an unlocked sliding door, but was scared off when the family dog started barking. Nothing was stolen, but the file is still under investigation.
On July 24, an erratic driver was reported on Highway 101 near Menacher Road in Madeira Park, after a vehicle was witnessed tailgating and passing more than one vehicle at a time on double solid lines.
The suspect vehicle was then seen roadside near a second vehicle that was in the ditch. The occupants of both vehicles then fled the scene in the suspect vehicle. The vehicle in the ditch was soon after reported stolen from Madeira Park.
The file is still under investigation.
On July 25, during a police roadblock on Highway 101 at Largo Road, two alleged impaired drivers were stopped and given 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions, and their vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
On July 26, police witnessed a motorcycle speeding northbound on Cemetary Road. Radar confirmed the motorcyclist was travelling more than double the posted 50-km/h speed limit.
Police pulled over the motorcycle and issued the driver a violation ticket for excessive speed and the motorcycle was impounded for seven days.
On July 27 during a roadblock on Highway 101 near Monkey Tree Lane in Sechelt, police spoke to a driver who was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver admitted he'd been drinking and that he shouldn't be driving, however, he refused to provide a breath sample for a roadside alcohol-screening test. Instead, the male put himself in the back of the police vehicle and told police to take him to jail. The male was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
On July 28, police attended a single-vehicle collision after a southbound motorcyclist lost control in the 12600 block of Highway 101 in Madeira Park and crashed into a ditch. Paramedics attended to assist the injured motorcyclist, who had to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, and the fire department advised the motorcyclist appeared to have lost control after driving through a small oil spill on the road. The oil appears to have come from a burst container, believed to have fallen off a vehicle. The motorcyclist was listed in stable condition.
On July 29, a witness reported an erratic driver westbound on Highway 101 near Flume Road in Roberts Creek, after a vehicle was seen speeding up and slowing down and swerving in its lane.
A witness was able to provide a licence plate number and vehicle description. Police contacted the registered owner who advised she had had some trouble with the sun in her eyes while driving, so would slow down as a precaution, and then sped up again when she was in the shade. As the driver had no negative driving record, she was given a verbal warning and advised to purchase some sunglasses to help her see the road during bright days.
