Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for July 3 to 10:
On July 3, a shoplifter was caught at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. Staff witnessed the suspect taking an electronic device and left the business without paying for it. The suspect was apprehended and held in custody until police arrived. The suspect, who also had another small stolen item on her person, was released on a promise to appear in court. The file is still under investigation.
Early on July 5, an officer noted a vehicle driving erratically in the 5600 block of Highway 101 and conducted a traffic stop. The driver exhibited signs of impairment by drugs and the driver admitted to having smoked marijuana shortly before driving. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.
Early on July 5, a thief broke into a vehicle parked in the 1100 block of Fairview Road in Gibsons by smashing the driver's side window with a rock. The thief stole a Makita cordless tool set, a nail gun and an iPod Nano.
Between June 29 and July 1, a thief stole six barrels out of a fenced compound at a business in the 5800 block of Sechelt Inlet Road. The metal barrels were empty, sealed top and bottom and marked with a sticker that says "1A1."
On July 5, an officer noted a vehicle drive by with an obscured front licence plate and after conducting a traffic stop, noted the driver had the smell of alcohol on his breath. The driver stated he'd last consumed alcohol less than an hour prior to driving. The driver was given a roadside alcohol-screening test and the driver was issued a 12-hour driving suspension as well as a violation ticket for driving contrary to restrictions and failing to display "N," after it had been showed that the driver had consumed alcohol.
Late on July 5, a loud explosion disturbed residents in the 5200 block of Radcliffe Road in Sechelt. RCMP attended to find the area smelling strongly of smoke and located the source, an ice bomb that had been let off by a resident in his backyard. The resident was advised about the bylaws against such activity and of the disturbance he was causing.
On the morning of July 6, a thief stole a STIHL chainsaw out of a vehicle while it was parked either in the 900 block of Gibsons Way or 3800 block of the Port Mellon Highway. The almost-new chainsaw is a model MS170-16.
Overnight on July 8, a thief gained entry into several boats moored in the 5400 block of Anderson Road in Secret Cove. A large variety of items were stolen, including fishing equipment, tools, life jackets, depth sounders and stereo equipment.
Overnight on July 7, a thief stole a wooden carving from a yard in the 700 block of Hillcrest Road in Gibsons. The carving, which stands almost 2.5 feet-high, is of a fisherman wearing a sou'wester hat. The thief ripped the carving off its rock base. The carving has high sentimental value and anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 and reference file number 12-4493.
Between July 4 and 9, a thief gained entry into a boat docked in Port Mellon and stole a variety of items including a .308 rifle, a 20-gauge shotgun, ammunition, tools, a VHF radio, and cash. Police are reviewing security footage.
