Turnover coming on regional board

There will be several new faces at the Sunshine Coast Regional District board table after the municipal elections. At least three of the seven current SCRD directors will not run for re-election in November.

There will be several new faces at the Sunshine Coast Regional District board table after the municipal elections.

At least three of the seven current SCRD directors will not run for re-election in November.

John Rees, who represents Pender Harbour and Egmont, is the only SCRD director who has announced he definitely will seek office again.

Bernie Mulligan, director for West Howe Sound, announced at the July 21 board meeting that he will not run again. Mulligan first served on the SCRD board in the 1970s and was elected again in 2002. He said he enjoys politics but finds he's now too busy with business obligations and as a volunteer director of a pension plan.

Roberts Creek director Adrian Belshaw and Elphinstone director Celia Fisher had announced their plans to withdraw from politics earlier.

Gibsons Mayor Barry Janyk also announced he would not run for re-election last October, after he lost his bid for the provincial NDP candidacy in this riding. But last week, Janyk said he may yet decide to throw his hat in the ring for a third term as mayor.

"A lot of people have said, 'really, think about it.' I'm definitely reconsidering the 'no' decision," said Janyk. "There is a lot going on. I'm worried about getting these community centres built on time and on budget."

Janyk said he is trying to resolve three issues and expects to make up his mind by the end of August whether to run.

Halfmoon Bay director John Marian said he has not decided whether he will run for a third term.

Ed Steeves, who represents the District of Sechelt on the SCRD board, will likely announce his intentions in September. Chief Stan Dixon will continue to represent the Sechelt Indian Band.
