Three days on the high seas

Six Sea Cadets from Gibsons Conway Division had a fun-filled three days on the high seas last weekend. Amber Erichson, Kassia Millar, Jackson Cruz, Travis Hodgson, Clayton Harding and Alex Christian joined Sea Cadets from RCSCC Lonsdale to travel to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt on Thursday evening. They stayed at the base overnight and spent Friday morning in a class and practical session on fire and damage control in ships. In the afternoon they visited the fleet diving school and had a tour of HMCS Yellowknife in port.

Friday evening they split up and boarded two Canadian cadet training ships for two days of standing watches and learning about shipboard procedures. They visited Poet's Cove and Pender Island and spent the nights on board in harbour, putting out to sea again for daytime training. The winds reached 43 knots at one point and the seas were rough all weekend, but the cadets said the waves were a highlight of their trip, as were the porpoises they saw.

Sea Cadets (age 12-19) and Navy League Cadets (age 9-13) meet every Wednesday during the school year at 7 p.m. in Gibsons Legion. For information, call Bill Parsons at 604-886-8716 or Sidney Clare at 604-886-6561.
