The food bank shelves are empty

Summer is always a challenging time for the Sunshine Coast Food Bank. This year has been particularly difficult. Donations have been quite low while demand has remained the same. The food bank has also been faced with rising food costs.

Summer is always a challenging time for the Sunshine Coast Food Bank.

This year has been particularly difficult. Donations have been quite low while demand has remained the same.

The food bank has also been faced with rising food costs. According to Stats Canada, food prices in Canada rose almost eight per cent in the last three years. This has not only made it more difficult for the food bank to keep its shelves full, but has impacted many people in the community whose grocery bills have steadily increased. It costs $868.42 per month on average to feed a family of four in B.C. according to the latest report from the Dieticians of Canada.

The food bank needs your help. Please donate food, produce from your garden, or money to Sunshine Coast Community Services Society at 5638 Inlet Ave. Sechelt. Learn more by contacting Dale Sankey at 604-885-5881, ext. 240, or by visiting www.sccss.ca.

Last year, the team of food bank volunteers gave 2,908 hours and distributed 12,661 bags of food, representing an average of 1,055 visits each month from people living in our community. Approximately 30 per cent of the individuals served by the food bank are children.
