Up your s'smores game with some gourmet recipes.

Anyone can make gourmet s’mores in the comfort of their own home, but what about taking these ooey gooey treats to the next level around a campfire.

Heading out to do some camping (or glamping) this Canada Day long weekend? Here are some easy ideas sure to impress the adults in your group. Tip: if you’re camping with kids, you might want to stick to the basics like melted chocolate and marshmallows.

The ingredients in these recipes travel well, can be condensed to save space, and need little gear for preparation so can be easily assembled over a fire.

Of course, if there’s a fire ban in your area there are alternative methods for making s’mores that will still allow you to enjoy these redefined classics.

Nutella & Strawberry S’mores

Ingredients

A small jar or snack packs of Nutella

Fresh sliced strawberries (if you have a cooler), dehydrated if you don’t

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Method

Spread Nutella on Graham crackers, add strawberries and sandwich a roasted marshmallow in the middle.

Salted Caramel S’mores

Ingredients

Individually wrapped caramels or caramel sauce in a squeeze bottle

Dark chocolate squares

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Sea salt: a small packet or a salt grinder — if you’re taking one anyway

Method

Stack dark chocolate and caramel on a Graham cracker, top with a hot roasted marshmallow, sprinkle with sea salt and top with another cracker.

Peanut Butter Cup S’mores

Ingredients

Mini Reese’s or similar peanut butter cups

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Method

Unwrap a peanut butter cup and place it on a graham cracker, top with a freshly roasted marshmallow and add another cracker. The heat melts everything together.

Churro S’mores

Ingredients

Graham crackers pre-dusted with cinnamon sugar (or bring some pre-mixed in a baggie)

White chocolate squares

Marshmallows

Method

Toast marshmallow, then sandwich with white chocolate between two cinnamon-sugar crackers. Tip: If you bring tinfoil or a grate, lightly toast the crackers over the fire to warm the chocolate.

Bourbon Bacon S’mores (A favourite with the adults)

Ingredients

Bourbon chocolate bar if you can find one, or a square of chocolate with a tiny splash of bourbon from a mini bottle (or a large bottle, depending on your plans for the weekend).

Pre-cooked candied bacon (keeps well in a sealed bag)

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Method

Layer chocolate and bacon on cracker, add hot marshmallow and squish together. Enjoy!

Toasted Coconut and Almond S’mores

Ingredients

Milk chocolate squares

Toasted coconut flakes (in a baggie)

Almonds or almond butter

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Method

Spread almond butter, if using, top with a square of chocolate and sprinkle with coconut. Add your roasted marshmallow and smush.

Lemon Meringue S’mores

Ingredients

Lemon curd in a small jar or pouch

Shortbread cookies

Marshmallows

Method

Spread lemon curd on one cookie, top with marshmallow, press with second cookie.

Tips to make your gourmet s’mores a success

Bring tinfoil or a grill grate for heating the Graham crackers (tinfoil is a campfire must-have.)

A cooler will keep perishables like bacon or strawberries fresh — and your adult beverages cool.

If you don’t think there will be any available or appropriate roasting sticks where you're going, bring your own from home. Coat hangers will work in a pinch.

Moist wipes can be a lifesaver, especially if there are kids involved.
