Survey results show progress

The Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) recently received the results of an independent public opinion survey conducted in late 2010.

Five hundred residents living between West Howe Sound and Egmont were randomly called and asked their opinion on a series of questions focusing on the awareness and activities of the SCCF.

"The survey results build on the findings of a similar survey conducted in late 2009," said SCCF chair and president John Henderson in a news release. "These results again confirm the broad community support that exists for our forestry and economic management activities. Those having a favourable impression outnumber the unfavourables by three to one."

Some specific results from the survey include:

56 per cent of those aware of the SCCF approve of our role in creating local jobs.

63 per cent of those aware of the SCCF believe we are logging in an environmentally responsible manner.

73 per cent of those aware of the SCCF feel we are doing a good job of keeping the community informed.

29 per cent of the community have no firm impression about the SCCF

60 per cent of the community uses our local forests in outdoor recreation activities - mostly walking and hiking.

4 per cent of the respondents stated that management of the Community Watershed was the reason for them having an unfavourable view of the Community Forest.

"While we are seen to be doing a good job of keeping the community informed, we need to continue to work hard to maintain and build on the support we have," Henderson said. "We will continue the good forest management practices that the community strongly supports along with continuing our support for local value added businesses, enhance recreation and provide continued economic benefits and forestry education to our community."

The survey also asked residents to rank the issues facing the Sunshine Coast. Topping the list was infrastructure issues (roads, sewers, water), followed by concerns about the environment, the economy and unemployment issues.
