On Nov. 8, the new school board of trustees for the Sunshine Coast School District No.46 (SD46) met for the first time.

The meeting began with a land acknowledgement by District Principal of Indigenous Learning Kerry Mahlman and a song shared by kwayimin Andy Johnson of the shíshálh Nation.

Of the newly elected trustees, all but Ann Skelcher were incumbents returning to their positions. The board also includes Amanda Amaral, Sue Girard, Samantha Haines, Maria Hampvent, Stacia Leech, and Pammila Ruth. Annalisa Achee is the student trustee.

At the same time, they repeated their oath. Together, they promised to faithfully perform the duties of their offices, comply with disclosing any conflicts of interest, and not allow private interests to influence their conduct in public matters.

Amaral became the board chair once again after being the only nominee for the role. Stacia Leech joined her as vice-chair, and  Ruth accepted a nomination to become the BC Public School Employers’ Association representative. The BC School Trustees’ Association Provincial Council representative is Girard.

Trustee Ruth was also appointed as a signing officer.

SD46 board meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the school board office.
