A 47-year-old Sunshine Coast man was sentenced to one year in jail with two years of probation in a sexual interference case.
Kristen Tyler Boutilier pleaded guilty last year to sexual interference of a person under 16 years old. He appeared in person in Sechelt Provincial Court on March 8 for sentencing. The victim’s identity is protected by a publication ban.
The charge stems from repeated incidents in 2015 when Boutilier sexually interfered with a child who was 12 years old at the time. Some of those interferences occurred when the victim was visiting Roberts Creek, while others took place in other parts of B.C. Boutilier was 40 years old at the time of the offences, Crown counsel told Coast Reporter.
Once Boutilier is released from jail, he must follow conditions including reporting to a probation officer and providing his residential address. Boutilier is not allowed to have any contact with the victim or the victim’s family, and is not allowed to at the residence, school or workplace of the victim and the victim’s family. Boutilier is also not allowed to have any contact or be in the presence of any person under the age of 16, unless they are in the presence of that child’s parent or guardian who is aware of the probation order. He will also have to attend counselling, including sex offender treatment and psychiatric or psychological treatment as directed by the probation officer.
Boutilier is also required to provide a DNA sample and register with the sex offender information registry for 10 years.
“That’s exactly what I was looking for,” Crown counsel Trevor Cockfield told Coast Reporter of the judge’s decision.
The defence counsel told the court Boutilier was born and raised in Gibsons. He has worked in the IT department of the Sunshine Coast Regional District since the 1990s.
