Wharf Ave upgrades behind schedule, looking at third week of June completion

The sidewalks and parking along Wharf Avenue are changing but the work is taking a little longer than expected because of archaeological requirements.

The Wharf Avenue sidewalk improvements between Cowrie and Dolphin streets will not be completed by the end of May as initially projected.

Sechelt Director Alton Toth told the Sunshine Coast Regional District board that even though it is “full steam ahead” with the upgrades, there were delays related to archaeological requirements. The contractor has estimated the work would be done by the third week of June, said Toth.

The flow of vehicles and pedestrians through this section will be disrupted from time to time from March 8 onward, it was announced back in March. Sechelt is building new sidewalks and reconfiguring vehicle parking along the west side of the route.

The construction is handled and managed by coast-based firm NB Contracting.

The new layout will make the sidewalk contiguous and change vehicle parking from angle to parallel orientation between the Bank of Montreal and Batch 44 distillery. The parking re-design will reduce the number of spaces but eliminate the need for vehicles to back out of those parking spots into the through traffic lane as it continues into the community’s downtown core.

“We’re aiming to have the work completed by the end of May. If it goes longer, it will be paused until the end of the busy summer season,” municipal communications manager Lindsay Vickers told Coast Reporter in an March 7 email.

Drivers are advised to plan for potential delays travelling through this section of Sechelt until the project is done. Information on traffic disruptions and project updates will be posted on the district website.
