Something old, something new at Chat fashion show

Hemlines go up and down. So do waistbands, necklines and sleeve lengths. Colours go in and out of style along with fabrics, hats and hairdos.

Hemlines go up and down. So do waistbands, necklines and sleeve lengths. Colours go in and out of style along with fabrics, hats and hairdos. What makes these changes happen? Is it just a few corporate giants in fancy New York offices or a few influential designers who tell us what to wear? Or are there social factors, like wars and changes in women's place in society that influence fashion choices?

These are some of the questions that will be explored at Something Old, Something New, a fun and different fashion show put on by the Chatelech Secondary School Grad Class of 2004. Part of the show will be about what young people are wearing today, featuring fun and carefree clothes from Lucy's. Sportswear for an active lifestyle from Source for Sports will also be modeled. There will be performances by some of the talented students from this year's Chat Grad Class. The second half of the show will take a look at the past, a time trip from 1920 to 1986, the year this grad class was born. What would your grandmother have worn on a date in the 20s or 30s? What did your mom wear to the prom in 1968? The clothes were sometimes exquisite and sometimes amusing from a stunning 1935 champagne satin evening gown to the bizarre look of the 80s. And don't forget the guys: there will be tails, tuxedoes and a Buddy Holly jacket, not to mention baby blue polyester!

The date to mark on your calendar is Friday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. The location is the Seniors' Centre in Sechelt. Tickets are $10, available at Talewind Books and the Roberts Creek Store.
