Solar water heater on the block

Rising energy costs and the desire to reduce one's personal carbonfootprint are fuelling a growing interest in solar energy on the Sunshine Coast.

Rising energy costs and the desire to reduce one's personal carbonfootprint are fuelling a growing interest in solar energy on the Sunshine Coast. So it's fitting that the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) will be auctioning a solar water heating system at itsannual Celebration of Conservation event on Nov. 22 at the Seniors Centre in Sechelt.

Donated by local entrepreneurs Michael Siddall and Tella Sametz, who are distributing the TH solar systems under an arrangement with the B.C. distributor, Barry Gillis, the unit retails for approximately $1,895. With installation costs typically less than $600, Siddall points out, this makes for a very economical green energy saving system.

The most popular system, and the one to be auctioned, consists of an array of glass vacuum tubes feeding into a heavily insulated, stainless-steel-lined, 40-gallon storage tank. Each tube has a copperheating element, which is inserted into the tank. No water circulatesin the tubes, so there is no risk of freezing or leakage, and thesystem is effective year round, unaffected by the actual temperature.

The system is intended to pre-heat water entering the regular domestic water tank. In some instances, such as off-grid summer cabins, the unit may even be the sole source of hot water. No pumps or other electrical equipment are required.

The Celebration of Conservation is an annual fundraising event for theSCCA, which is committed to the preservation of biodiversity and environmental values throughout the Sunshine Coast forest region. Tickets are $15 in advance, available at WindSong Gallery in Sechelt and Gaia's Fair Trade Gifts in Gibsons; $20 at the door. As well as a mostly silent auction, the event will include dancing, food and cash bar and recognition of those who have contributed to the preservation of our precious environment.
