A 53-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with unknown injuries at about 8:30 a.m. today (Aug. 29) after rescue workers freed her from her car.
Sunshine Coast RCMP said the driver lost control of her vehicle on Highway 101 in the vicinity of Trail Island Drive and it crashed into a tree.
"It doesn't appear that there's any other vehicles or anybody else involved so we're just trying to get her extracted and get some proper care to her right now," Sunshine Coast RCMP Cpl. Kris Josephson told Coast Reporter on the scene Thursday morning.
He said the fact the vehicle was "up against a tree" was causing "problems for the extraction."
The highway was closed in both directions while crews worked to free the trapped and injured woman.
The driver was ultimately rescued from her vehicle with the help of the Sechelt volunteer fire department, which had many members on scene.
According to Drew McKee with the Halfmoon Bay unit of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, the coast guard hovercraft CCGH Penacwas called in and waited on standby in Davis Bay to provide transport for the injured woman to hospital in Vancouver as the air ambulance helicopter was having difficulties getting clearance to fly with the weather conditions. As it turned out, the helicopter was able to get out of Vancouver through the overcast and slipped into St. Mary's Hospital thus negating the need for the hovercraft lift.
