A 60 year old male may be facing multiple firearm offence charges after the Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in Gibsons on the evening of Oct. 12. In an Oct 13 press release, RCMP media relations officer Karen Whitby detailed that officers responded at 6:30 p.m. to a location in the area of North Road between Bridgeman Road and Chamberlin Road after witnesses reported a male had fired off several rounds from a firearm.

The release states the suspected shooter did not respond to officers' attempts to engage with him on his property. Local officers set up containment in the area and with assistance from the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team. The suspect was taken into custody at his residence without incident.

Residents and local traffic in the area was diverted for several hours as a cautionary measure.

The local detachment also took to Facebook on the evening of Oct. 12 to ask that vehicle and foot traffic avoid the area of the police response and that the public not post information to social media on their observations related to the incident, pending a full investigation.
