Sharing the message of hope

Hope - if there is one good thing that comes out of surviving a devastating disease, it is to give hope to others.

Hope - if there is one good thing that comes out of surviving a devastating disease, it is to give hope to others.

Shelley Viscount-Piercey, a beautiful young mother on the Coast, credits her recovery to maintaining a positive attitude and the loving support from family and friends. She wants to share her message of hope with as many people as she can. That's why she's a top fundraiser and active participant in the Relay For Life.

Despite the arduous task of surviving the disease, including daily trips to Vancouver for eight-hour stints of chemotherapy and radiation treatment that revivals a Stephen King novel, Viscount-Piercey managed to keep her attitude positive with the loving support of her friends.

Her team is called Shelley's Selectives because she has selected these people in the immeasurable appreciation of what they gave to her and her family during their time of need. There is nothing to compare to the bond these people feel for one another. The close friendship has been and will be maintained forever. Being a survivor of cancer has left Viscount-Piercey with a sense of responsibility to get the message of hope out to others. Her message is clear: never give up and always keep the faith. Cancer is an ugly disease, but it can be beaten, and that's why Viscount-Piercey participates in the Relay For Life - to show other cancer victims that if she can beat an almost unbeatable form of the disease, they too have hope. "If it was not for the wonderful Dr. Kellett and the other physicians from the B.C. Cancer Agency, it may not have been so easy for me to continue to maintain my positive attitude," she said.

If you are a cancer survivor or currently surviving cancer, please join us on May 28 at Roberts Creek Elementary School and participate in the survivors' victory lap. You, too, can send out the message of hope. Contact Sandra Cunningham at 604-886-7791 if you'd like to register or wish to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life.
