Affordable housing that includes proper wiring, plumbing, safety measures and shelter for those who cannot afford to buy their own home is on the fast track to actualization.
At Wednesday's council meeting, councillors voted in favour of amending a zoning bylaw to allow for the suites in single-family dwellings. The owner of the home must be in the residence for at least nine months of the year, provide off-street parking and be registered with the District of Sechelt.
The only change made to the bylaw was to alter Section 307 Home Occupation paragraph 8 of Zoning Bylaw No. 25. It allowed for a secondary suite resident to have a home-based business that employed one other person. The majority of council said the intent behind secondary suites was housing, not commercial enterprise. In the end, it was decided the secondary suite resident can have a home-based business but cannot hire an employee.
